چکیده

In addition to simple and mixed phase schemes in HDC, a more complex scheme with the inclusion of graupel substance being another prognostic variable is developed. The performance of the scheme will be examined against the Purdue Lin A bulk parameterization of cloud particles and precipitation drops that is primarily based on the works of Lin et al. (1983) and Rutledge and Hobbs (1983) has been a core part in representing cloud and precipitation processes in both General Circulation Models and mesoscale models. For the last two decades, they have been successfully applied to the simulation of convective systems. On the other hand, some problems has been reported, for example, producing too much ice crystals in the upper troposphere. Table 1. Major components of the Ice mic ocesses sug

A new double moment approach for the warm-rain process based on the WSM6 scheme (WDM6)

The double-moment approach for the bulk microphysics schemes that allows more flexibility of the size distribution enabling the mean diameter to evolve in contrast to the single-moment approach has become one of the promising methods to improve microphysical processes in the mesoscale modeling area. Cohard and Pinty (2000b) showed the superiority of a double-moment approach in two-dimensional e...

Sensitivity study of cloud-resolving convective simulations with WRF using the PLIN and WSM6 microphysical parameterizations

At NCAR, real time forecasting experiments with a 4-km grid mesh over the central US employed the WRF-Single-Moment 6class (WSM6) Microphysics scheme that replaced the Purdue Lin (PLIN) scheme in early 2005. Both schemes have the same number of prognostic water substance including graupel. Although some preliminary reports identified the overall superiority of the WSM6 to the PLIN scheme in res...

Effects of Cloud Parameterization on Radiation and Precipitation: A Comparison Between Single-Moment Microphysics and Double-Moment Microphysics

This study compares a single-moment microphysics scheme to a double-moment microphysics scheme using four observed cases of a mesoscale cloud system. Previous studies comparing a single-moment microphysics scheme to a doublemoment microphysics scheme have focused on microphysical processes or overall dynamics, precipitation and morphology of cloud systems. However, they have not focused on how ...

Impacts of a-priori databases using six WRF microphysics schemes on passive microwave rainfall retrievals

Physically based rainfall retrievals from passive microwave sensors often make use of cloud-resolving models (CRMs) to build a priori databases of potential rain structures. EachCRM, however, has its own cloud microphysics assumptions. Hence, approximated microphysics may cause uncertainties in the a priori information resulting in inaccurate rainfall estimates. This study first builds a priori...

Implementation of a two-moment bulk microphysics scheme to the WRF model to investigate aerosol-cloud interaction

[1] A two-moment bulk microphysical scheme has been implemented into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to investigate the aerosol-cloud interaction. The microphysical scheme calculates the mass mixing ratios and number concentrations of aerosols and five types of hydrometeors and accounts for various cloud processes including warm and mixed phase microphysics. The representation ...

Evaluating the Snow Crystal Size Distribution and Density Assumptions within a Single-Moment Microphysics Scheme

The Canadian CloudSat/Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) Validation Project (C3VP) was a field campaign designed to obtain aircraft, surface, and radar observations of clouds and precipitation in support of improving the simulation of snowfall and cold season precipitation, their microphysical processes represented within forecast models, and radiative ...
